Rummy How-To: Mark a Bottleneck Card in Your Hand

A bottleneck card is a card that several possible layouts need. It can make a hand look flexible while secretly making every route depend on one arrival. Marking bottlenecks gives you a more honest picture of progress.

List your current routes and underline cards that appear in more than one. A middle card in a sequence is a common example, but a rank needed by two sets can create the same problem. Do not count a route as complete merely because the bottleneck exists; it can serve only one group when the hand is finalized.

Once the bottleneck is marked, find a substitute. Look for another sequence, a different set, or a discard that reduces the hand’s dependence on it. The substitute does not have to be equally attractive. It only needs to keep the hand legal and manageable if the expected card never arrives.

Recheck the mark after every draw and discard. A new card may remove the bottleneck by completing one route, or it may create another conflict. Keep the notation temporary. The purpose is to guide attention, not to turn a live hand into a rigid diagram.

Before declaring, allocate every card once. If the same card is still doing work in two places, the plan is unfinished. A bottleneck check is especially useful when the hand looks nearly complete, because visual neatness can hide an illegal overlap.
