Rummy FAQ: How Do You Compare Two Weak Discards?

Two weak cards can create a harder decision than one obvious discard. Use a fixed comparison so the choice does not depend on whichever card feels most annoying.
First, check legal roles. Does either card contribute to a pure sequence, a confirmed group, or a strong backup? Protect the card with the more important role even if its point value is higher. Structure is usually more urgent than a small reduction in penalty.
Next, compare future routes. Which card has more clean continuations, and which one depends on a single draw? A card with no route can be released, but check whether it is also blocking a useful pair or set. Remove redundant roles before unique ones.
Then consider point cost and table information. If the strategic roles are equal, discard the higher-cost card. If they are still equal, choose the card that reveals less about your strongest route or is less likely to help a visible opponent.
Say the reason in a short phrase. A repeatable tie-breaker makes close decisions easier to review and prevents a weak discard from becoming an emotional choice.
